ABOUT THE MENA SMARTPHONE
Film Festival
Welcome to the MENA Smartphone Film Festival, a celebration of filmmaking talent from the MENA region. Our festival is dedicated to bringing together emerging filmmakers, industry professionals, and audiences for a unique cinematic experience. Our focus on climate change provides a rich and timely context for stories that reflect our changing world. We invite you to join us and experience the power of film to create empathy, inspire action, and ignite change.

At MENA Smartphone Film Festival, we believe that every story is important, and every story deserves to be told. We encourage filmmakers to use their camera as a weapon for change, to tell stories that matter to them, and to share their perspectives on the world. Our festival is a celebration of the power of storytelling, and we offer a platform for filmmakers to showcase their work and connect with audiences from around the world. At the MENA Smartphone Film Festival, we are proud to partner with sponsors who are dedicated to making a difference in climate change. Our sponsors support filmmakers who use their storytelling powers to raise awareness about climate change issues. We invite you to join us and submit your film to our festival to inspire change and make a difference.
Since 2023, we have been humbled to include among our growing list of partners and sponsors: the Doha Film Festival, Rabat Film Festival, and The Beverly Hills film festival.
WE'RE PUSHING BOUNDARIES
MENA has established itself as one of the principle organizations representing the culture and art of the MENA/SWANA community in B.C.
We’re committed to bring MENA/SWANA arts and culture to audiences through music, storytelling, food, talks and interventions by activists and academia, and of course film! We strive to highlight intersectional content that brings MENA/SWANA into dialogue with the critical issues facing ourcommunities as a whole: helping engender a decolonial, anti-racist and gender-identity and equitydiscourse to all our activities.
We select films that complicate the narratives around MENA countries while respecting their uniqueness and diversities.
WE'RE REACHING A WIDER AUDIENCE
We’re reaching more people every day as our social media engagemen and co-presentations grow. Our digital strategy continues to attract our local audience to the arts and artists that Represent the MENA/SWANA community across the diaspora. Through our social channels, we
create conversations about issues pertaining to the region, championing artists and events fromthe region, and supporting local arts and culture events and individuals whose values align with ours.This year, we are investing in an advertising campaign with the aim to reach 100K individualfollowers across Canada. Our campaign is targeted towards people from various age groups withan interest in arts and culture, with a focus on film, community and diversity.

WE'RE GROWING!
Since starting out with seed funding from Neighbourdhood Small Grants for our inaugural screenings at Emily Carr’s Reliance Theatre in 2019, we have grown into a multiplatform festival
recognized globally as a hub for film art in Canada for the MENA/SWANA region with more than
a dozen partners in BC and across Canada.
